Are You Really Over Your Ex?

How do you know when you are over your ex? Three signs that the breakup has become a memory, and what to do once you get there.

How do you know you're over your ex? So many people ask this. It's an interesting question, because everyone focuses on healing and moving on, and hardly anyone talks about how you know you've got there: that you're over your ex and not heartbroken anymore.

Here are some signs that can help you tell. First, there's no fixed rule, because every person is different and so is every healing process. The way I moved on won't be exactly the way you do, so keep that in mind.

The first sign is that when you think about your ex, it feels like just a memory. The strong feelings are gone. If you think about them and feel fine, or feel nothing at all, that's a good sign. At the beginning, thinking about your ex always brings something up: missing them, hating them, anger, tears. So if you can now think about them without being swept away, you're on the right track.

One note: you won't stop thinking about your ex completely. You'll still think about them, just a little. They were a big part of your life, and some memories stay forever. As long as they don't take over, that's fine.

The second sign is that you no longer feel the need to talk about your ex and your breakup. I remember what I was like afterwards. I always wanted to tell my story, to let people know what had happened and how I felt. Maybe I was looking for a way out. I couldn't think about anything except my ex, and I talked about it constantly. When you don't want to talk about the breakup because you don't need to anymore, you know you're doing well. It means your ex isn't a big part of your life anymore.

The third sign is that you're in a new relationship and you love your partner. I don't mean a relationship to forget your ex, but a healthy new one where your ex no longer matters. And if you're not in a relationship yet but can picture building something new with someone else, that's also a good sign you're ready to move on.

If you think you're over your ex and you're wondering what's next, my answer is to keep working on yourself and taking care of yourself. Keep becoming a better person and a better partner. It will only make your life better and happier. If there were things that helped you heal and feel good, keep doing them. Don't stop what's working.

Healing a broken heart is the first part. It's about healing the past. Then the second part begins: rebuilding yourself and making your future a good one.

To recap: if you can think about your ex without feeling bad, if you don't feel the need to talk about them and your story, or if you're in a new relationship or can picture one, those are good signs. You're over it, and you're on the right path.
