Nobody really prepares you for the physical side of heartbreak. We focus so much on the emotional pain that we often ignore what's happening to our bodies.
You know the feeling. You're exhausted but you can't sleep through the night. You have no appetite, or you can't stop eating junk food because it's the only thing that feels comforting. Your body feels heavy, like you're walking through wet mud. Your mind is racing, but your body is slow, tired and disconnected.
If that's you, hear this: it isn't all in your head. The pain is real, and it's physical. You're fighting one of the hardest emotional battles of your life with a body that's running on empty. You wouldn't go into a big fight with no sleep and no food, so why ask your body to do that now?
Thirty minutes in my living room
I remember this paralysis so clearly. After my breakup I felt trapped in my own body. I didn't want to eat. The thought of exercising felt like a joke. It was hard to get out of bed in the morning, and even harder to fall asleep at night, because I couldn't stop thinking about her. My body was just stuck.
One day, feeling desperate and hopeless, I acted on a sudden impulse. I put on some music and turned it up loud. I didn't feel like it. I wanted to stay on the couch. But I made myself stand up, and then I started dancing like crazy, right there in my living room. It probably looked ridiculous, but for those 30 minutes something amazing happened. The painful loop of thoughts in my head stopped. I felt a surge of energy and a release of tension I hadn't known I was holding.
It didn't solve my heartbreak. But it was the first proof I had that I could change my mental state by changing my physical state, even for a little while.
Be kind to your body first
That's the shift. Right now your body is taking a beating from stress. It isn't failing you. It's doing its best to keep you going. So the kindest thing you can do for your mind is to be kind to your body. This isn't about a six-pack or a marathon. It's about compassion: giving your body the basic fuel and rest it needs to support you.
Instead of asking your body to carry the full weight of your emotional pain without help, start supporting it so it can help you carry that weight. Think of it as a simple physical first-aid kit with three parts. The focus is on good enough, not perfect.
Sleep
Sleep is the foundation of everything. It's when your brain processes emotions and memories, and without it everything feels ten times heavier and more hopeless. The goal isn't a perfect eight hours. It's a simple bedtime routine.
An hour before you want to go to bed, put your phone away. No screens. Instead, listen to calm music or a podcast, read an actual book, or drink a cup of herbal tea. You're telling your body it's time to rest, even if sleep doesn't come easily.
Free writing can be part of that routine too. This isn't about crafting the perfect journal entry. Take a pen and paper and dump all the chaotic thoughts in your head onto the page for five or ten minutes. Don't worry about grammar or making sense. The point is to get the thoughts out so they aren't bouncing around when you're trying to rest. It's like tidying a messy room before you can relax in it.
Food and water
This is your fuel. Your brain needs nutrients and water to make the chemicals that keep your mood steady, and junk food and dehydration will make you feel worse, mentally and physically. Again, you don't need to become a chef. Try two simple rules:
- The One Good Meal rule. Make one simple, nutritious meal for yourself each day. Just one.
- The Water First rule. Before coffee or anything else in the morning, drink a full glass of water, and keep a bottle with you all day.
You'd be surprised how much better you can feel just from being properly hydrated.
Movement
This is your mood shifter. Moving your body is one of the fastest ways to feel better, and it doesn't have to be a hard workout. Use the 10-Minute Rule: move your body for just 10 minutes a day. A walk around the block. Stretching in the living room while the TV is on. Or, like I did, three of your favourite songs and some dancing. The goal is simply to change your physical state, because your emotional state will follow.
Pick one this week
This week isn't about becoming a health expert. Pick just one of the three and commit to it for the next few days. Maybe it's the One Good Meal rule, or maybe it's the 10-Minute Rule. Don't try all three at once. Choose the one that feels easiest and see how you feel. There are more ideas for all three in Heal Your Body to Heal Your Heart.
You have the power to feel a little better, right now, today, and it starts with these simple physical choices. Your body is your partner in this. The more you support it, the more it will support you.
You can't think your way out of a broken heart, but you can build a body strong enough to carry you through it. Start there.
