How to Think Less About Your Ex

Trying to control your thoughts rarely works. Why changing what reminds you of your ex works better, and how to do it without regrets.

Moving on is hard. You want to, but everything reminds you of your ex. It can feel impossible. Here's one tip that will help you think about them less.

Do you know that feeling? You think you're over it, you've almost forgotten your ex, and then a song brings everything back. It happens to everyone. It happened to me when I was trying to forget my ex. Everything reminded me of her.

The presents she bought me, the photos of us together, the songs we used to sing, her favourite perfume and so much more. I tried my best to forget her, but it was hard. We'd shared a lot, and I had so many memories.

Maybe you're going through the same thing right now. You try your hardest, but your mind won't listen. It keeps bringing your ex back, again and again. It's frustrating. Thoughts are hard to control, so I want to suggest a different approach.

Instead of trying to control your thoughts, change the things that make you think of your ex. Thoughts usually have a trigger. Almost always, something reminds you. By changing your surroundings and cutting down the reminders, you make moving on easier.

That means putting their presents somewhere you can't see them, along with the photos and anything else that reminds you of your ex. But don't be overdramatic and do something you'll regret later. You don't have to throw anything away. One day, when the feelings are gone, you might want those things, or want to look back. Small changes can make a big difference.

It gives you some relief straight away, and it helps you move on. First, fewer reminders means fewer thoughts. Second, and even more important, it shows you that you're ready and willing to move on. It's easy to say "I want to move on" and keep crying without doing anything about it.

When you take real action, like putting away everything that hurts, you're moving forward. You're doing something that will help you be happy. Healing starts in the mind, and once your mind is on your side and supporting you, it happens. There's no magic to it.

Make things as easy on yourself as you can. The fewer things there are to remind you of your ex, the easier it gets to move on.
