Thank You for Breaking My Heart

Gratitude feels impossible right after a breakup. Why it helps anyway, and a gratitude exercise that includes a thank-you note to your ex you never send.

Gratitude is one of the keys to healing after a breakup. I know you're hurting, and things feel really bad right now. But right now is exactly when gratitude can help most.

Let me explain why.

First, gratitude simply feels good. In a moment when you're truly grateful, there's very little room for anger, sadness or hate. After a breakup it's normal to feel terrible, as if it's the end of the world. People want to get rid of that feeling, but fighting it rarely works. If you want to let go of bad feelings, you have to let some good ones in. The more good there is, the less space the bad has.

You might be thinking that your situation is awful and there's nothing to be grateful for. But there's more than you think. Try it as an exercise: write down everything you're grateful for. To make it easier, split it into sections. Your family and friends. The things you love in life. The fact that you're alive and able to feel. You had the chance to feel real love. Maybe it ended, but it was an experience not everyone gets to have. You can be grateful for small things and big things, and for the future you want.

When you practise gratitude, you start to notice what's going right, and things begin to look different. It's hard to move on when all you see is black and all you do is cry. It's hard to move on without hope. Gratitude is one of the simplest ways to find some.

There's one more thing to do: thank your ex. Only on paper, as an exercise. Don't send them anything. You don't have to thank them for being a good person if you don't believe they were. You can thank them for teaching you what love isn't, and what you're not looking for. Every breakup, however painful, teaches you something and makes you stronger.

Train your mind to notice the good. I'm not asking you to be blind to the bad. I'm asking you to give the good more of your attention than the bad. That can be the turning point. The calmer and more hopeful you feel, the easier it becomes to move on.

A breakup is part of life, and it's a lesson. Take the lesson and grow from it. Don't let a bad day wipe out the progress you've made. You will be happy again, and you deserve to be.
