Should you tell people about your breakup? Should the people around you know exactly what happened? Is it even a good idea, or is it better to keep it to yourself?
Do you have to tell your story? No. It's your life, and you only have to do what's right for you. If you feel embarrassed, you don't owe anyone an explanation. People can also be a bit much sometimes and ask questions you don't want to answer. Still, here's why I think sharing it usually helps.
First, a breakup is natural. It happens to people all over the world. Many people feel that if their relationship failed, they're a failure, and it's something to hide. That isn't true. So many people are going through the same thing, and it says nothing bad about you. If you want to share but you're afraid people will judge you or see you as a failure, don't be.
Healing takes time, sometimes weeks and sometimes months, and believe me, you don't want to do it alone. Alone, it takes longer and it's harder than it needs to be. You'll need support along the way, and your friends and family will be there if you let them know.
Second, telling someone what happened and how you feel brings relief. Keeping it all to yourself is overwhelming. Sometimes your friends and family can give you a different perspective, a useful idea, or simply be there when you need them. Holding everything in and hiding what you feel from the people around you is hard, and it does more harm than good.
Third, it helps to involve someone if there are practical things to settle with your ex, like money or children. When it comes to negotiating and protecting your rights, you can't let your emotions lead, so it's best to have someone you trust help you rather than doing it alone.
If you decide to tell your story, who should know? I'd start with the people close to you, the ones you trust, because they're the ones who'll be there for you. At work, the people around you will probably notice something is wrong anyway. It can help to tell them you're going through a hard time, so they understand. You don't have to go into detail, and it's fine to say you're not ready to talk about it. But don't hide everything, because it will only make things harder for you.
To recap: you don't have to tell anyone. But if you do, you'll get help and support, you'll feel some relief, and you'll have someone on your side for any money or children questions. Choose who you tell, and how much.
