How to Deal With an Unexpected Breakup

A heart breaks in a second and takes months to mend. What I learned when my own breakup took me completely by surprise.

Life is full of surprises. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring, and most breakups are unexpected too. Mine took me completely by surprise. I was in love with my ex, and all I could think about was how perfect she was and how happy I was. I didn't see any signs. I didn't see that she didn't feel the way I did. I was blind, and when we broke up it caught me totally off guard.

Maybe that happened to you too. Or maybe you saw it coming and couldn't do anything to stop it. A heart breaks in a second. One look, one sentence, even one word is enough. Mending it, healing, forgiving and moving on all take time. It's not fair, I know. But that's life, and that's love. A broken heart is a bad surprise, no question.

You could spend the next months crying and telling everyone how your ex ruined your life. And you'd have every right to. But I know from experience that it won't help. It only hurts you more and makes healing take longer. I want you to look at it differently, in a way that helps you heal and feel happier. You deserve to be happy, but you'll have to work for it.

Life has good surprises too, and your turn will come. You'll meet new people who bring light into your life. You'll have experiences and discover things that make you happy. Someday you can find someone who gives you what you deserve, and a relationship that feels like one. Until then, enjoy the surprises of being single. Being single can be special: it's a time to learn and try so many new things, and they'll make you a better person and a better partner later on.

Enjoy life, don't forget to smile, and don't let anyone take that from you.
